Wind tugging against the skin, freedom in each gust of wind, and a longing for the skies and the sun, the Aarakocra have claimed the skies for their own, and have made their homes in the swaths of land that kiss the sky.
Of Skies and Cliffs
Aarakocra are a race of anthropomorphized bird folk. They have the head, wings, and legs of a bird with the torso and arms of a humanoid. Their humanoid hands end in talons instead of fingernails, and their feet are those of a bird. Much like birds, they are mostly covered in feathers, with scaly skin on the lower half of their legs and arms as the feathers fade out.
They tend to be around 5 ft tall with an impressive wingspan of up to 20 ft. They usually weigh a slight 90 lbs on account of their avian bones. All Aarakocra are carnivores and either hunt or scavenge.
Keepers of the Skies
Being most at home in the skies, Aarakocra spend as little time on land as possible, as they are able to lock their wings to remain in the sky for hours to days, gliding from squall to squall, current to current. Aarakocra are dynamic and acrobatic fliers, echoed in an almost preternatural grace on the land.
The Avian nature of Aarakocra shows in their mannerisms as well, from being fastidious about their feathers and wings to smaller avian movements and gestures. They will also use clicks and chirps as emphasis in their speech.
Confinement is one of the Aarakocra’s greatest fears. Being held underground or surrounded by earth is a stress very few Aarakocra can take, as being grounded against their will is torment enough. They are usually peaceful and enjoy solitude however, the males in particular are more irritable and warriorlike. In combat they avoid melee combat and prefer to attack from range while in the air. They never wear shields as it greatly affects their ability to fly.
Where the Winds Travel
The Arakocra are a tribal people, staying in smaller tribes typically not much bigger than a handful of family units. The only ties to the land these bird folk have are when nesting to lay eggs and raise their young, before they take to the skies again, making them a nomadic people, with no more possessions than what they can carry with them in their skyborne travels.
An Aarakocra tends to stick to their tribe and are avoidant if not directly hostile towards other species unless they have ties to nature or are avianlike. They will connect with those that aid them or worship the same deity as a general rule.
They worship Syranita, Krocaa, or Aedrie Faenya. Those worshipping Syranita tend to be watchful and lovers of music and those who worship Krocaa tend to be warriors who fight against evil aligned aerial creatures. Though the majority of Aarakocra worship Aedrie Faenya who simply wants her followers to be free and enjoy the skies.
