Ratatosk

They are defenders of the World Tree. They look like humanoid flying squirrels and hate evil in all forms. Ratatosk usually panic in the face of violence unless they are pressed to defend something they care about. They are usually content with their care-free lives as they keep to themselves, amusing themselves with riddles and wordplay and wordgames.

Squirrel Folk

These creatures resemble flying squirrels, having a furry membrane on each side of their body that connects their arms and legs. They also have large, flattened tails that they used to direct their gliding. The fur on their bodies — which ranges from shades of black to gray and brown to red — is thick enough to keep them comfortable in all but the coldest of winter freezes. The members of a pack almost entirely exhibit the same fur color. The fur of their tails is uniformly darker than the rest of their body, usually matching the bark of nearby trees. Ratatosks typically wore no clothing other than protective hats and harnesses to carry gear.

Carefree Unless Provoked

These creatures are rather careless with their lives and panicky fighters, more willing to fight in groups than alone. They are not fueled by anything like bloodlust or heroism but pure panic when they fight. Though they rarely fight except when needing to defend their tribe, Yggdrasil, or their children. They are willing to fight to the death in order to protect Yggdrasil. And even when they do engage someone in combat, they aren't interested in outright killing them.

Ratatosks are adept at taunting and have a fondness for riddles of all kinds. They sometimes taunt and tease travelers of Yggdrasil with such riddles until they receive an answer. People providing them with their own riddles could earn a Ratatosk's respect or aid.

Defenders of Yggdrasil

Native to the plane of Yggdrasil, Ratatosks view the plane as their home and their deity. They instinctively hate fire and people with axes as their people have defended the World Tree from many foes using those methods for hundreds of years. If they do leave their home plane it is either in exile or for the purpose of scouting potential threats.
